British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
