Entire Career of Salary Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Enter Richest 10%, Study Says

According to fresh research, the typical earner in the UK would require half a century of salary to reach the net worth of the wealthiest 10% in the country.

Widening Financial Divide Over Time

The study reviewed financial assets data covering the Covid pandemic period and determined that back in 2006-08, it would have needed nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to enter the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

A research lead involved with the analysis stated: "Financial divides in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the wealth ladder."

Quantifying the Wealth Divide

The analysis revealed that the disparity between the assets of the typical individual and an individual in the top 10% was £1 million in the mid-2000s, but had expanded to £1.3 million in actual value by the pandemic years.

The analyst further stated: "These gaps are particularly worrying as wealth mobility in Britain is limited – people that start life affluent tend to remain affluent, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Although the financial disparity growing in actual numbers, the percentage of complete net worth in the UK owned by the richest households – called "comparative financial divide" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s era," per the study.

Throughout these years, total wealth in the UK surged from three times the annual GDP, to approximately 7.5x.

Factors of Financial Divide

Termed "automatic" appreciation, through rising house prices and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity since 2010, according to the report.

These increases tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the analysis reveals – worsening the age-based economic gap.

Generational Wealth Disparities

The median economic difference between thirty-somethings and those in their early 60s grew by more than 100% in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310k.

Geographic Disparities

Additionally, there were significant geographic differences, with the median value of net worth in 2020-22 amounting to £290k in the southeastern region, where housing costs have typically increased quickly, versus £110k in the NE of England.

COVID Era Effects

During the pandemic, when numerous employees were protected by the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns limited opportunities for spending, the information reveals numerous families were capable of accumulating, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, however. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their available funds rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the two years pre-pandemic. Conversely, the typical family in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
