New research indicates that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
