Powerful Gales Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals urged to stay indoors as severe gales batter the nation.

Severe gusts hitting speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 properties without power and forced agencies to cancel over 100 air travel services, according to domestic outlets.

The winds are impacting the entire southern region and southern sections of the northern region, per the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have issued infrequent severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas including Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been urged to stay indoors, avoid travel, and prepare for further electricity and network failures.

Broad Impact and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting homes mostly in the South Island, though authorities state that power was being restored progressively.

Local media have indicated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, whereas power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a man was killed after being hit by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a road by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Aircraft services to and from the city have been cancelled as a result of the weather, whereas some roads and libraries are also closed.

At the same time authorities in Canterbury have issued a crisis declaration, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Strike Action During Harsh Conditions

The powerful gales on this day occur while tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees take part in what has been termed a "significant labor action", calling for improved salaries and workplace environments.

But the severe conditions has pressured them to alter certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or cancelled.

Like conditions are also sweeping the nearby nation, causing a high-temperature event to the country's outback.

Officials have declared fire bans for apprehension regarding forest fires.
