This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
